Hello! Here is a little about me.
I was a forensic biologist with the Iowa DCI Crime Lab for 10 years. Working in the DNA section, I saw firsthand how prevalent sexual assault is in our communities; however, I was aware of this long before I ever began working in forensics. At the age of 16, I was raped by a former boyfriend. For years, I lived in quiet shame because I didn’t feel that I met the stereotype of what a “rape victim” was, and the guy didn’t meet the stereotype of a “rapist.” I felt that I must have done something wrong and that what happened must have somehow been my fault. Eight years later, I let God into my life. At that point, I found a healing I never thought was possible. I also found forgiveness for my attacker through God’s grace and mercy.
Several years ago, God called me to use my experience, and knowledge from working in criminal justice to speak out and share my story. I believe there are two main reasons God has called me to speak about sexual assault. The first is to raise awareness that this crime does happen in our communities, to “people like us”; to dispel myths about rape victims and offenders; and to make sure people know what to do if it happens to them or someone in their life. The second reason is to glorify God and show how He can use all things for His good (Romans 8:28).
